What Andrew Trevor-Jones has to
say about his Leak Detector

Underwater Camera Housing Leak Detector Owner - Andrew Trevor-Jones
I purchased and fitted a Leak Detector to the Ikelite housing for my Nikon D300 in September 2008. I checked it before every dive but never had a problem... that was until June 2009.
I was on a dive at 18 metres and was having problems adjusting the aperture on the camera. I jiggled the control for the sub-command dial when immediately the Leak Detector started flashing.
I quickly informed my buddy and together we made an emergency accent (while still observing our safety stops). I had no idea how much water there was in the housing, but kept the housing as level as possible to minimise any hitting the camera or lens.
Once back to the car I found only a small amount of water in the housing. A sanitary pad had absorbed most of the water but there was still a small amount flowing around. After much investigation and after sending the housing back to Ikelite twice, it was determined that there was a fault with the control (and some others) and they were letting water in when used. Ikelite replaced the housing at no charge.
Without the Leak Detector, I would have had no idea of the leak. Even though it was small, there was enough water, had it got on the camera and/or lens, that irrepairable damage would have been done.
Further, I would not have even known that the housing had faulty controls. The Leak Detector also let me know that the initial repairs of the housing did not stop all the leaks.
The Leak Detector certainly saved my camera and my favourite 60mm macro lens. I will not take my camera underwater without the Leak Detector in the housing.
